Why videos are big, and how to make them smaller

File size is not an accident — it is bitrate multiplied by duration. Once you see where the bytes go, shrinking a video becomes a series of decisions instead of guesswork.

Where the bytes go

A video file spends almost all its space on the picture track, and the encoder spends its budget per second of footage.

  • Resolution sets the floor

    More pixels per frame means more bytes per frame. A 4K frame carries four times the pixels of 1080p before compression even starts.

  • Frame rate multiplies it

    Sixty frames a second is twice the frames of thirty. Content with little motion between frames compresses the difference away cheaply; busy content does not.

  • Recording bitrate is the culprit

    Modern phones record at bitrates that pass 10MB in seconds — which is why raw phone clips are the usual reason people need to reduce video size at all.

Ways to reduce video size

Every method trades something. Knowing which lever you are pulling keeps the result predictable.

  • Re-encode to a smaller bitrate

    The main path and what this tool does: rewrite the file under a tighter budget, letting the encoder choose what detail to soften.

  • Lower the resolution

    Dropping from 1080p to 720p or 480p cuts the per-frame cost directly. Clean 480p beats artifact-riddled pseudo-HD every time.

  • Trim and then compress

    Shortening the clip fattens the budget for what remains. Trimming alone reduces size too, but it reduces content — the two stack.

How much smaller, honestly

Set expectations by ratio, not by hope.

  • 30 to 50 percent: barely visible

    For personal footage, cuts in this range usually pass a side-by-side glance.

  • 70 to 90 percent: clearly softer

    Fine for chat sharing where the video is watched once on a phone screen; risky for anything archival.

  • Beyond 95 percent: different media

    A 1GB clip squeezed to 10MB keeps one percent of its information. It will play; it will not look like the original.

  • Favour resolution over artifacting

    When the budget gets tight, dropping frame size produces a cleaner watch than forcing the encoder to starve a bigger frame.
